Humanities researchers at LFU Innsbruck cooperate with Vorarlberg companies

Acquisition of experience

Knowledge transfer smallGIKO is a highly technical company in the packaging industry in Vorarlberg. The techn. Head Angelo Zaffignani has gained experience in the company for more than 42 years. In order to preserve this knowledge of experience, members of the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the LFU Innsbruck created a handbook with the help of the GABEK® procedure, which is a reference work of his knowledge.

How can the experience of older employees be presented and further used by the company, even if the employee is no longer active? Can personal subjective knowledge continue to be used in the form of a manual, a supplementary work or a textbook? These questions were at the starting point of Mag’s project. Sebastian Fink, Prof. Dr. Josef Zelger and DDr. Jakob Strickner from LFU Innsbruck.

Especially for this project, a new and innovative survey method was developed, in which association networks were first formed from the respondent's answers and then used in the further survey. So the questioner asks himself, so to speak. “This is like talking to a friend,” Angelo Zaffignani said about this new form of interview.

In accordance with GABEK® rules, with the results of 12 hours of text, the manual “Basic knowledge packaging by Angelo Zaffignani” was developed, which contains three parts: an overview of the overall context of the individual topics, experiences about the consequences and side effects of measures that are relevant in the company and explanations of all individual topics. It showed how knowledge elements are brought into a stable context through experience.

The usefulness of the manual is to show what should be considered in internal company tasks in order to avoid errors, save costs and increase quality. The manual also provides working documents for in-house training. Knowledge acquired over many years by Angelo Zaffignani proves to be a decision-relevant basis for fulfilling the tasks involved.
