Qualitative research, text analysis and interview evaluation with GABEK

Course at the University of Innsbruck WS 2013

uniinnsbruck_largeThe GABEK (Complete Management of Complexity) method developed at the Institute of Philosophy is a computer-assisted method of knowledge organization. Based on open interviews, texts from the Internet or other verbal data, individual opinions and attitudes are networked. Knowledge networks of a selected group or organization can be presented and used to control decision-making processes.

It shows how the GABEK method can represent the distributed experience of many people through semantic networks. Topics addressed in interviews are nodes in the network, the edges are stored by texts in which the topics are related to each other. A method of complexity reduction is predefined. GABEK networks serve – in high complexity – to find innovative ideas and – in reduced complexity – the overview of the entire field of knowledge or the analysis of concepts, the formulation of general principles and the reconstruction of conceptual ontologies.

GABEK has been used in practice for innovation research, evaluation, organizational development, mission statement development, market research, conflict resolution, regional development, product comparison, knowledge transfer, etc.

Participants will be provided with a coded GABEK document and the WinRelan software, which enables them to carry out the individual work steps: The following topics will be covered:

Project design, data collection through open interviews, transcription, basic coding, formation of concept networks and ontologies, evaluation coding, feedback workshop for the selection of focus areas, causal coding, design, implementation workshop for the selection of measures, transfer of results, writing of the project report.
