Explain and understand representative quantitative surveys through qualitative questions

Fraunhofer ieseIn the “Innovation Space” of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Kaiserslautern, a lecture by Josef Zelger showed how representative quantitative surveys can be supplemented by qualitative questions in such a way that the statistical results are explained and profoundly understood.

For this purpose, the software-supported GABEK process is® used. It serves to transform normal-language texts into linguistic networks, which can be analyzed fine-grained or coarse-grained at will. This allows representations of evaluations of the objects, states, processes and decisions described by the respondents. Furthermore, their causal opinions are reproduced in the form of directed graphs.

A project by the City of Munich showed how a representative online statistical survey was supplemented by nine open questions. As a result of the survey of 986 citizens of Munich, the statistical results on tourism acceptance could be explained by qualitative answers. From the verbal baseline data, consistent text groups were formed, the summaries of which were grouped again, so that a logical-hierarchical structure of texts forms an ordered overview of the overall situation, thus achieving an expanded understanding of the overall situation.
