Workshop “Corporate Semantic Web” – Leibniz Center for Computer Science

The semi-automatic recording of central meaning relationships in extensive texts

“The semi-automatic recording of central meaning relationships in extensive texts” was a lecture by Josef Zelger at Schloss Dagstuhl, the Leibniz Center for Computer Science as part of the workshop “Corporate Semantic Web”, which Börtecin Ege, Thomas Hoppe, Bernhard Humm and Anatol Reibold had initiated.

It shows how GABEK can identify the central meaning relationships in extensive verbal data. Texts are represented as semantic networks. Automatic methods of complexity reduction are applied, the results of which are supplemented and controlled by manual navigation in the complete database.

Three examples demonstrate the approach. First, manually evaluated interviews with farmers about their ontological beliefs about Austrian agriculture are analyzed. Then, as an example of automatic methods of complexity reduction, the analysis of the five books of Moses from the Old Testament follows. In order to check whether the results of the procedure are central contexts of meaning, the Gospels and the Acts of the New Testament are finally analyzed. It is shown that the semi-automatically reconstructed core statements are confirmed by the generally accepted Nicäno-Constantinopolitan Creed.

The GABEK method can provide an overview of largely established ontological beliefs based on surveys, print media or the Internet, which can be used as a scaffold or structure to analyse details and answer specific questions.
